ICSR SEMINAR: INDIA'S INTERNAL SECURITY DILEMMAS

Speaker: General (Ret.) Ashok Kumar Mehta

India’s greatest security challenges come from within the state. Traditional concerns have focused on threats from both Pakistan and China, though a conventional war with either remains unlikely. Instead, communal tensions, insurgents in the North-East, Pakistani backed terror groups in Kashmir, and Naxalite-Maoist insurgents along India’s ‘red corridor’ continue to destabilise the state from within.

New Delhi’s response has been sporadic, favouring a mix of both military and diplomatic approaches. In this presentation General (Ret.) Mehta debunks popular myths about India’s security concerns while explaining the internal challenges it faces and the steps being taken to counter them.

General (Ret.) Mehta is a retired senior officer in the Indian Army. His last assignment was GOC IPKF (South) Sri Lanka. He is a founding member of the Defence Planning Staff in the Ministry of Defence. General (Ret.) Mehta is also the author of War Despatches: Operation Iraqi Freedom.
